Traffic Skills 101 is sanctioned by the League of American Bicyclists and is taught by certified League Cycling Instructors Jim Bruce and Peter Mehl. The six-hour course is designed to give beginning as well as more experienced cyclists the training they need to ride safely and legally in traffic and on trails. The course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills, and crash avoidance techniques. It also includes a free student manual. Recommended for adults aged sixteen and above, this highly regarded, fast-paced course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. This course is also required for those wishing to become instructors themselves. The class consists of two segments with a lunch break between: three hours of classroom instruction and three hours of non-strenuous drills on a parking lot followed by a slow group ride on city streets. Students will be graded and awarded a certificate on the basis of their on-bike performance as well as a written exam. Traffic Skills 101 classes will be regularly offered on a Saturday in the fall and in the spring.
